Christmas Poem XII: “Christmas in My Heart”

Every year, I write a poem for Christmas, and include it in my Christmas cards to friends and family. For the days leading up to Christmas, I’m publishing all of my Christmas poems here, as a kind of Advent calendar.

Today’s poem was written in 2003.

Houses built with love and joy
Homespun poems with handmade art
A girl who helps a homeless boy
This is Christmas in my heart

A king and peasant who share a feast
An angel crooning noel’s start
A gift borne by a friendly beast
The tales of Christmas fill our hearts

Not a yearning to look above
Not a prize achieved by rich or smart
But a faith that drives us out to love
When Christmas nests within our hearts

This Christmastime I have one prayer
That even if we’re worlds apart
We have the gift of hope, the faith to share
And cradle Christmas in our hearts
