Labyrinths in the Snow

So, yesterday I wanted to walk a labyrinth. I was feeling cabin fever, on vacation yet stuck in my house on these cold days. I didn’t want to drive several hours to find one I hadn’t walked yet, so I decided to go to one of my favorites, the labyrinth at the Sisters of Christian Charity convent in Mendham, New Jersey.

Light flurries fell as I drove. I listened to amusing podcasts.

I arrived, and parked my car. I knew just where the labyrinth was from the parking lot. I had to take care while walking as the sidewalk was covered in ice. This fact sat strange in my head, like my brain was trying to tell me something. I walked around the building, and saw the large, beautiful labyrinth there in the field before me, and …

…yeah. That’s what my brain was trying to tell me. The labyrinth was completely covered in icy snow. The path and the walls of this labyrinth, I recalled, were all inlaid bricks of two different shades. So there was absolutely nothing to show me where the path was. The bird tracks and pine cones certainly didn’t help with that.

And I just started to laugh. I laughed and laughed. For five minutes. I got back to the car, and kept laughing. I’m not sure why I found this so funny, but I did. No labyrinth walking today, but it didn’t feel like a wasted trip. I hadn’t laughed like this in a very long time.

  1. There’s an Irish phrase- a good laugh and a good nights sleep can cure most any ills. Wonderful.
