Every year, I write a poem for Christmas, and include it in my Christmas cards to friends and family. For the days leading up to Christmas, I’m publishing all of my Christmas poems here, as a kind of Advent calendar.
Today’s poem was written in 2010.
They grow up so soon, they grow up so fast
They one day discover that Christmas won’t last
So before she thinks Rudolph is something long past
I’ll show her the hidden Noel
Her heart is so pure, her mind is so fresh
So I’ll show her a reindeer, a snowman, a creche
I’ll tell her the tale of the Word made flesh
That Word? It’s the hidden Noel
Right now she sees Santa in every white beard
While I see hope in the things that I feared
For her the Yuletide has only appeared
For me it’s the hidden Noel
See, Christmas is magic for young girls and boys
But there are some sorrows that aren’t solved by toys
And yet there is hope that will guide us to joy
The hope of the hidden Noel
We wish for you hope, and we wish for you light
We wish for you peace on this holy night
We wish for an end to all suffering and spite
We wish you the hidden Noel
