Every year, I write a poem for Christmas, and include it in my Christmas cards to friends and family. For the days leading up to Christmas, I’m publishing all of my Christmas poems here, as a kind of Advent calendar.
Today’s poem was written in 2007.
O what is this night,
This night full of light,
That kindled old Simeon’s heart to take flight?
This night, it is Christmas,
The night of God’s birth,
A birth that reveals brilliant news to the earth.
O what is this night,
This night full of light,
That fills up our darkness and quenches our spite?
This night, it is Christmas,
A night full of peace,
A peace that gives hope that all suffering will cease.
O what is this night,
This night full of light,
That calls us to joy and to dreams beyond sight?
This night, it is Christmas,
The night we reply
And sing of the breaking of dawn from on high.
